46% of all Google searches have local intent. When someone searches "digital marketing agency near me" or "best restaurant in Udaipur", Google shows a map pack of 3 businesses before any website results. If your Google Business Profile isn't set up — or set up poorly — you don't exist for those searches.

What Is Google Business Profile?
Google Business Profile (GBP) — formerly called Google My Business — is the free tool that controls how your business appears on Google Search and Google Maps. When someone searches for your business name, or for businesses like yours near their location, your GBP listing is what shows up.
It includes your business name, address, phone number, website, hours, photos, reviews, and more. It's not a directory listing — it's a search result. And unlike your website, it shows up instantly for local searches without needing months of SEO work.
Google's "map pack" — the 3 businesses shown with a map at the top of local search results — gets 44% of all clicks on a local search page. Your website's organic ranking doesn't matter if you're not in the map pack. GBP is how you get there.
What You Need Before You Start
Before you go to business.google.com, have these ready:
- A Google account — use a business email, not a personal Gmail if possible
- Your exact business name — must match signage, website, and other directories exactly
- Your complete address — including floor/unit number, area, city, state, and pincode
- Your primary business phone number — ideally a local number, not just a mobile
- Your website URL — if you don't have one, you can add it later
- Your business category — think about this carefully (more on this below)
- Your business hours — including special hours for holidays
No Physical Address? No Problem.
If you're a service-area business — consultant, freelancer, delivery service, home baker — you can hide your address and set a service area instead. You still get a GBP listing and appear in local searches. We'll cover this in the setup steps.
Step-by-Step Setup Guide
Follow these steps exactly. Small mistakes at setup — especially in business name and category — are very hard to fix later and directly affect your ranking.
Go to business.google.com and sign in
Open business.google.com in your browser and sign in with the Google account you want to manage the listing from. Use a business email address — not your personal Gmail — so that ownership stays with the business, not an individual.
Enter your business name exactly
Type your business name exactly as it appears on your signboard, website, and other directories. Do not add keywords, city names, or extra descriptors (e.g. "Best Restaurant Udaipur" instead of "The Spice Garden"). Google calls this keyword stuffing and can suspend your listing for it.
Choose your primary business category carefully
This is the single most important decision in your entire GBP setup. Your category determines which searches your listing is eligible to appear for. Type a keyword and choose the most specific matching category available.
For example: a hotel should choose "Hotel" not "Lodging". A CA firm should choose "Chartered Accountant" not "Financial Services". A performance marketing agency should choose "Marketing Agency" not "Advertising Agency".
Add your location (or service area)
If you have a physical location customers visit, enter your complete address. Include building name, floor/shop number, street name, area/locality, city, state, and pincode. The more complete your address, the better Google can place your pin on Maps.
If you're a service-area business with no customer-facing location, select "I deliver goods and services to my customers" and enter the areas you serve. You can define service areas by city, district, or pincode radius.
Add your phone number and website
Add your primary contact number — this shows prominently on your listing and enables the "Call" button on mobile. Add your website URL. If you don't have a website yet, you can skip it for now but add it as soon as possible — listings with websites rank higher.
Choose your verification method
Google requires you to verify that you actually own or manage the business before your listing goes live. You'll be offered one or more verification methods depending on your business type. See the next section for a full breakdown of each method.
Complete your profile after verification
Once verified, your listing is live — but an incomplete profile ranks poorly. The next section covers everything you need to fill in to maximise your ranking and conversion rate.
Verification Methods Explained
Google offers several verification methods in India. Which ones are available to you depends on your business type, category, and history.
| Method | How It Works | Time | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Postcard | Google mails a card with a 5-digit code to your address | 7–14 days | Physical businesses with a permanent address |
| Phone call / SMS | Google calls or texts a verification code | Instant | ✓ Fastest — use this if available |
| Verification code sent to your business email | Instant | ✓ Easy — requires Google Workspace email | |
| Video verification | Record a video showing your business, signage, and location | 3–5 days review | New businesses or where postcard isn't reliable |
| Live video call | Google agent verifies via video call | Scheduled | High-trust categories (healthcare, legal) |
| Instant verification | Auto-verified via Google Search Console | Instant | ✓ Best — available if GSC is already set up |
Postcard delivery is unreliable in many Indian cities and towns. If your postcard hasn't arrived in 14 days, request a new one from your GBP dashboard. If it still doesn't arrive, try video verification — it's become the most reliable alternative for Indian businesses since 2024.
What to Fill In After Verification
Most businesses stop at verification and wonder why they don't rank. The profile completeness score directly correlates with ranking. Here's everything you must fill in:

On Photos: More Is More
Businesses with 100+ photos get 520% more calls and 2,717% more direction requests than average. Start with at least 10 high-quality photos at setup. Add new photos every month — Google's algorithm treats regular photo additions as a freshness signal.
6 Mistakes That Hurt Your Ranking
These are the most common errors we see when auditing GBP listings for Indian businesses:
Keyword stuffing in the business name
Adding "Best SEO Agency Udaipur" to your listing name instead of just your actual business name is a violation of Google's guidelines and can get your listing suspended. Your category and description are the right places for keywords.
Wrong or vague primary category
Choosing "Professional Services" instead of "Chartered Accountant" or "Salon" instead of "Hair Salon" means you miss specific search queries. Always choose the most specific category available.
NAP inconsistency across the web
Your Name, Address, and Phone (NAP) on GBP must exactly match what's on your website, JustDial, Sulekha, and other directories. Even small differences — "St." vs "Street", "+91" vs "0" prefix — confuse Google's local algorithm.
No photos or outdated photos
A listing with 1–2 photos from 3 years ago signals an inactive business. Google deprioritises listings that don't show regular activity. Set a monthly reminder to add at least 2–3 fresh photos.
Not responding to reviews
Review response rate is a ranking factor. Responding to every review — positive and negative — within 24–48 hours signals an active, customer-focused business. Never copy-paste the same response.
Ignoring Google Posts
Google Posts (offers, updates, events) appear directly on your listing and in search results. Businesses that post regularly rank higher than those that don't. One post per week is the minimum to stay active in Google's eyes.
